Environmental Clean Technologies Limited (ASX:ESI) To Start Testing On Indonesian Coal

Melbourne, Mar 11, 2009 (ABN Newswire) - Environmental Clean Technologies Limited (ASX:ESI) has reached agreement with Indonesian coal mining company Ilthabi Bara Utama (IBU) to commence initial testing of low rank coal samples from its East Kalimantan mine for suitability for application of the Coldry process.

IBU controls over 3.3 billion tonnes of JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) resources, which is expected to double upon further exploration, and has closed a US$135 million privately-arranged equity-linked note financing facility for mine development. The mine is currently producing up to 2m t.p.a. and plans to ramp up production to 10 to 15m t.p.a. over the next 24 months.

ECT Chief Executive Kos Galtos said that following completion of the necessary testing, a business case would be developed with a view to moving to a Heads of Agreement if all proved successful.

"IBU can provide sufficient coal supply to meet current and future coal requirements for a >10M t.p.a Coldry production plant. The opportunity to access such a large resource in Indonesia will provide the Coldry plant with a key footprint into the South East Asian Market where there are a large number of coal fired power stations and consequently a huge market for the final product.

"Subject to successful testing of IBU's coal, a Heads of Agreement will be our next step," he said.

IBU's Trevor Butcher said he was excited about ECT's Coldry technology and looked forward to a future together. IBU sees the opportunity to enter into an agreement to utilise a cleaner coal technology important in its development as a company with the goal to develop technology to make coal mining cleaner for the environment than it has been in the past.

"It is IBU's intention to enter into a joint venture partnership with ECT to construct a Coldry plant in East Kalimantan and to provide enough coal at an agreed price for at least a 10M t.p.a plant," he said. Testing on the first samples of coal, sent by IBU, will be carried out to enable development of an acceptable business model before moving to a Heads of Agreement.

PT Ilthabi Bara Utama operates as a coal mining company with offices based in Jakarta and Balikpapan. The company currently produces thermal coal for both export and domestic consumption. More information on IBU can be found on its website http://www.ibu-coal.co.id

Ascom hires new CEO and consolidates its regional gold claims

Ascom Geology and Mining, (Ascom) a regional geological services and mining group established by the leading Mena private equity firm, Citadel Capital and a group of regional co-investors, announced this week that it has hired Kenneth Crichton to consolidate and streamline the company's operations under one umbrella.

Crichton, an Australian national with extensive experience in the mining industry in both Western markets and developing economies, will head Ascom's newly formed holding company, Ascom Gold. The group will include two gold mining companies in Ethiopia 'Ascom Ethiopia' and 'Nubia' and one in Sudan 'Naptah for Geology and Mining' and includes four concessions in the mineral rich area.

'Crichton is the ideal person to head this new entity that we are creating,' said Ascom Chairman, Fayez Gress. 'The financial, managerial and technical skills he has gained working in markets including Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea will be of extreme value to the company as it moves further along with its exploration and feasibility studies of the highly promising concessions that it has acquired in Ethiopia and Sudan.'

Crichton spent the vast majority of his 23-year career in the mining industry working for BHP Billiton, one of the largest mining companies in the world, where he held a variety of operational and managerial positions. In his most recent post he was President of PT Billiton Indonesia and PT Maruwai Coal, both subsidiaries of BHP Billiton.

While in Indonesia, Crichton was responsible for the exploration, development and operation of BHP Billiton's seven coal contracts in the Maruwai Basin in East Central Kalimantan. He also helped launch a $25m-a-year exploration program that resulted in the identification of a number of coal resources and mineable reserves. Significant among his achievements at BHP Billiton Indonesia was the fact that he managed to develop a national workforce capable of operating the business in a culturally sensitive region.

'I am pleased to be joining a company with growth prospects as promising as Ascom's. I look forward to the challenges ahead and the prospect of working in new countries, particularly virgin markets such as Ethiopia and Sudan,' said Crichton. 'The fact that we were able to attract a CEO of Crichton's caliber is verification that the company is moving in the right direction. He is definitely a very solid addition to the group,' says Gress.

Thai navy calls for upgrade of U-tapao airport

The navy has asked Pattaya City and the government to help upgrade U-tapao airport after it proved invaluable during the shutdowns of the two Bangkok airports last year.

Pattaya Mayor Itthipol Khunpluem and executives and councillors of Pattaya City this week met Rear Adm Sophon Boonchom, director of U-tapao airport, and other officials at the airport in Ban Chang district, Rayong, to discuss the refurbishing of the airport.

The meeting agreed that upgrading U-tapao was essential after it had to function as Bangkok's substitute airport when demonstrators from the People's Alliance for Democracy blockaded Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports late last year.

U-tapao's facilities were stretched to the limit by the large number of passengers and flights.

Naval authorities suggested five main areas of improvement, including landscaping of the airport and widening of the access road to four lanes from two.

Other points dealt with putting up billboards to raise income for airport operations, advertising on luggage trolleys and public relations campaigns to invite airlines and tourists to use the airport.

The navy asked Pattaya City to form a subsidiary to invest in and manage advertising at the airport.

Rear Adm Sophon said the airport would be renamed U-tapao-Pattaya and the Pattaya mayor and councillors would sit on the airport board.

The navy has sought a budget of 995 million baht from the government to build new aircraft parking facilities and a passenger terminal to double the airport's capacity, and acquire X-ray machines, fuel storage and fire engines, among other things.

The director expects the improvements to be completed in 2012.
